It's interesting how important oil is in our world. The world's oil is the substance that establishes kingdoms. world economies are directed by the price of oil. wars are waged. Lives are made, lives are destroyed, all by oil. But the world's oil as powerful as it is, cannot create what the world truly needs. The world needs peace. But this world cannot produce peace. The world needs hope that the world oil cannot produce hope. The world needs love. But the world's oil can't give you love. You can't transform a human heart. But God can. Gods oil is altogether different. God's anointing oil comes from a tree, from a tiny little fruit called an olive. And this oil represents his presence. And his presence changes everything. This little forgotten anointing oil, this oil of God is what the world and its people truly longed for. With the oil of his presence, there is peace. There is hope and there is love. In Our reading today, we see Samuel taking a flask of anointing oil and pouring it over the head of a young shepherd boy named David. God's oil isn't a thing. It's his presence. It's a person. It's his son, who is in his father anointed by the Spirit. And David in his anointing is a picture of the Anointed One, who together with his father in the spirit, offer the world an outpouring of peace and hope and love. God's ultimate answer is his son. He is the anointed one. The presence of God, the power of God, the blessing of God. He came according to the Scriptures, he was born of a virgin. He lived he was crucified he died, was buried, and he was raised from the dead. Now he offers us the oil of his presence. The Spirit of God now has been poured out on all flesh. We are like little oil lamps filled with the living God shining his light in this dark world. Through the oil of His Spirit. He is transforming one life after another all around the world. Hallelujah.
