Over and over again in these readings Ezekiel is called the Son of Man. This is the title that God has given him. Ezekiel is a herald of God's judgment and impending doom. Captivity awaits this adulterous people. judgment is coming because of their idolatry, their injustice, the murder that pervades the land. God is reckoning with all this. And he's telling the Son of man Ezekiel, to announce his judgment?
Jesus refer refers to himself as the Son of man, he ascribes this title to himself more than any other. Those hearing Jesus call himself the Son of man would likely have drawn the comparison between Ezekiel, But this son of man was not a herald of judgment. Instead, Jesus, the Son of Man, was the herald of God's good news and the kingdom of God. The good news was that God's fury would not be poured out on God's people, that God would reconcile himself to humanity. All of sins, fury would be released on the Son, he would experience the culmination of all evil and death on the cross. And in that act of co-suffering love, he would vanquish death, he would release its hold over humanity. He would set us free, and he would lead us into life. Jesus is a far better Son of man than Ezekiel. And Jesus heralds a far better message. The prayer of my own heart today is that I will hear it well, that I'll rest in what he has done, that I will be free, and that I'll follow him. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family for my wife, my daughter's my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you, may it be so.
You are loved!
