TODAY'S EPISODE:

Welcome, dear ones, to the second day of January and day number 2 of our journey through the Bible. I’m Hunter, your host, bible reading coach, and brother in faith. Here at the Daily Radio Bible, we keep it simple: we read through the scriptures — the Old Testament once, and the New Testament twice every year — with the hope of being transformed by the God who is love. Today’s readings are from Genesis chapters 3 through 5 and Luke chapter 2. We'll explore the fall of humanity, the story of Cain and Abel, and the birth of Jesus. Join us as we delve into these powerful passages and seek to be transformed by God’s word and love. Let's embark on this journey together. Welcome!

TODAY'S DEVOTION:

You know, sometimes we think we have to get ourselves straightened out at least a little bit before we can expect God to come near to us or do anything for us. But that's not the gospel at all. We are the ones that run and hide from him.

He's not the one who hides from us. No. He comes to us. In today's scripture, we see that Adam and Eve are banished from the garden. And oftentimes we read these passages, or at least they exist in our mind, in such a way that we think that they are banished because God is so holy that he can't stand to be in the presence of us or our sin, that somehow his holiness would be violated by being anywhere near us. But that's not what the scripture is saying, and that is not what God is doing. No. He is banishing Adam and Eve, but they are banished so that in their state of blindness and delusion that came over them when they agreed with the serpent and disobeyed God's instructions so that in that state, they would not do something that could not be undone.

No. God is not so holy that he must separate himself from you. God has come to you just as you are. In your delusion, in your darkness, he comes. He comes to restore us, to cover us, to open our eyes. Just as we are, God comes to us, and that's the gospel. The holiness of God is a holy love, and that love is a consuming fire that purges all things that are not of love. And that holy love sent Jesus to the cross so that he would break the power of sin, so that our eyes could be opened, so that we might see who we are in him, what he's created us to be.

We are his children, and he is a God who is with us. And that my friend is good news. And we can now live with him, participating with him in his great work of restoration of all things. And the news is so so good. It's better than we've ever thought. God has not banished us because he despises us. No. He has banished us so that he might find a way to restore us, and that is exactly what he's done.

And God is not so holy that he despises you and cannot be in your presence. No. He loves you, and he has come to you just as you are. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will understand these things and that I will experience the truth of it, and live in the joy of it. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son, and that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. Let's continue now in a time of prayer.

TODAY'S PRAYERS:

Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.

Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen

And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.
