Welcome to Daily Radio Bible, where we embark on a spiritual journey through the scriptures each day. Today is December 15th, and it’s day 350 of our adventure together. I’m Heather, usually your Sunday companion, and though I’ve missed a couple of Sundays, I’m thrilled to be back. Today, we’ll dive into the Book of James, exploring chapters 1 through 5. James offers timeless wisdom on trials, faith, and actions, urging believers everywhere to embrace patience and perseverance as we await the Lord’s return. After our reading, we’ll reflect on trusting God’s process, much like a farmer awaits his harvest. Join me as we gather around the fire of God’s love, seeking illumination through the Holy Spirit. And don't forget to stick around for our prayer time, uplifting words to start your day with strength and peace. Let’s jump right in.
TODAY'S DEVOTION:
James likely wrote these letters that we've read today about 15 or 20 years after the death of Jesus.
It seems that the early believers were expecting Jesus to return within their lifetime and were growing tired of waiting for things to be made right under his rule. Every generation since is in need of James' exhortation to be patient as you wait for the Lord's return. For anyone who has grown crops or plants, there is a lot of waiting involved. James does well to remind us of the farmer and how it is that crops grow. We can plant and tend a field or a garden or a window box, but it is the rains, something we cannot bring about, that actually aid in bringing the plant to full maturity. There is plenty in the world that is waiting for the life saving rain so that it can come to full maturity and bear fruit. We all are in need of this continual reign. James' reminder to his readers is to trust the process.
We can be courageous and hopeful even in the face of slow growth and seeming fruitlessness. We are to rest in the wisdom and love of God who is committed to the restoration and renewal of all things. Together, let us trust in the good farmer, the master gardener, the one who made his life to live within us and loves the world he has made. Take courage. The Lord is near to you today. And now, let's pray together.
TODAY'S PRAYERS:
Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.
Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen
And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
